U.S. authorities have identified the suspect linked to the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, a teacher and video game developer from Southern California, in a case that has sent shockwaves through Washington and raised urgent questions about security at high-profile political events.

According to CNN, Allen resides in Torrance, a suburb of Los Angeles, and was taken into custody shortly after the incident unfolded on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, where top government officials, journalists, and international dignitaries had gathered for the annual dinner.

The event, which was also attended by President Donald Trump and the First Lady, descended into panic after gunfire was reported inside the vicinity, forcing an emergency evacuation of guests, including senior political figures.

U.S. Attorney for Washington, Jeanine Pirro, confirmed that Allen is facing multiple federal charges, including use of a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. Investigators say the case remains active as authorities continue to examine his background and possible motive.

Allen was reportedly apprehended after running toward the ballroom area of the hotel during the chaos. Law enforcement officials say he was heavily armed at the time of arrest.

Interim Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, Jeffery W. Carroll, disclosed that the suspect was found with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. He reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat, although additional security deployments have been activated across Washington, D.C. in response to the incident.

“There is no reason to believe anyone else is in danger, but there are extra officers out and about tonight for events such as after-parties,” Carroll said.

Beyond the immediate security concerns, new details have emerged about Allen’s personal and professional background, painting a complex profile of the suspect now at the centre of a major federal investigation.

Public records show that Allen worked part-time as a teacher at C2 Education, a private tutoring and test preparation company, where he was once recognised as “Teacher of the Month” in December 2024.

His academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, obtained in 2017, followed by a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

During his academic years, Allen was featured in a 2017 local media report for developing a prototype emergency braking system for wheelchairs, a project that highlighted his early interest in assistive technology and engineering innovation.

In addition to his teaching and academic pursuits, Allen also identified himself as a video game developer. He is believed to have independently published a game titled Bohrdom on the Steam platform. Records indicate that he registered a trademark for the game in 2018 and had been actively working on a second project reportedly codenamed First Law.

Further financial disclosures reviewed by investigators show that Allen made a $25 donation to Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in October 2024, a detail that has added another layer of complexity to the ongoing probe.

The shooting triggered widespread alarm at one of Washington’s most prominent political gatherings, an annual event traditionally known for its blend of media, politics, and satire. The sudden outbreak of violence disrupted the evening’s proceedings and led to the evacuation of President Trump, the First Lady, and other high-profile attendees.

As federal and local authorities continue their investigation, questions remain over how the suspect was able to access the heavily secured venue and what may have motivated the attack. Officials say a full security review is now underway as part of broader efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future.
