The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a renewed warning to Nigerian travellers, stressing that visa overstays and breaches of immigration conditions could have wider consequences for future applicants seeking entry into the United States.

In a statement shared via its official X handle on Monday, the mission emphasised the importance of strict compliance with U.S. immigration laws, noting that responsible travel behaviour is key to maintaining fair and continued access for legitimate travellers.

According to the statement, when individuals overstay their visas or violate the terms of their entry, it can negatively affect how applications from the same country are assessed in the future. This, it said, may influence visa approval decisions for other Nigerians who intend to travel legally.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the mission stated. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”

The advisory comes amid ongoing efforts by U.S. authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in international travel processes. The mission noted that thousands of Nigerians travel to the United States annually for education, tourism, business engagements, and family visits, and urged all applicants to respect the conditions attached to their visas.

It further warned that visa fraud, document falsification, and misuse of travel permits remain serious concerns that could undermine the integrity of the system if not addressed. The mission encouraged members of the public to contribute to safeguarding the process by reporting suspected cases of fraud through official consular channels.

Individuals with credible information were advised to report via dedicated fraud prevention emails: AbujaFPU@state.gov or LagosFPU@state.gov.

Reaffirming its commitment to lawful migration, the United States Mission said it remains focused on supporting safe, legal, and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States. It added that applicants who comply with immigration rules should not be disadvantaged by the actions of those who violate them.

The warning serves as a reminder to prospective travellers of the importance of adhering strictly to visa regulations, as global immigration systems continue to tighten oversight in response to increasing concerns over overstays and irregular migration patterns.
