A deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego has shocked the United States and triggered widespread outrage after a security guard was killed while protecting children and worshippers during the attack.

Authorities said the shooting occurred on Monday when two teenage gunmen opened fire outside the mosque complex, which also houses a school attended by dozens of children.

According to police, at least three people were killed during the attack, including 51-year-old security guard Amin Abdullah, who has since been hailed as a hero for confronting the attackers and helping prevent a larger massacre.

Investigators said Abdullah engaged the gunmen in a shootout and quickly alerted staff members to initiate a lockdown, allowing approximately 140 children inside the mosque’s school to remain safe during the attack.

Two other victims, identified as community members Mansour Kaziha and Nadir Awad, were also reportedly killed while attempting to protect worshippers and assist during the chaos.

The two suspects, aged 17 and 18, were later found dead inside a nearby vehicle from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to law enforcement officials.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and local police are treating the attack as a suspected hate crime after investigators reportedly discovered extremist writings and anti-Muslim content linked to the attackers. Authorities believe the suspects may have been radicalised online through hate-driven ideologies.

The shooting has sparked grief and anger across the United States, with religious leaders, civil rights groups, and political figures condemning the violence and calling for stronger action against hate crimes and extremism.

Community members described Amin Abdullah as a devoted father, respected protector, and longstanding member of the mosque community whose actions likely saved many lives during the attack.

The Islamic Center of San Diego also praised the effectiveness of emergency lockdown drills carried out during the shooting, saying the quick response from staff and security personnel prevented further casualties.

The attack has renewed national debate around gun violence, religious extremism, Islamophobia, and the growing influence of online radicalisation among young people in the United States.

Security has since been increased around mosques and other places of worship in several American cities as investigations continue into the motives behind the attack.

Political analysts say the incident is likely to intensify conversations around domestic terrorism, hate-fueled violence, and public safety ahead of upcoming political debates in the U.S.
