Abuja Earth Tremor: Alake Orders Hourly Seismic Monitoring, Urges Residents to Remain Calm

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been urged to remain calm after a mild earth tremor was recorded in parts of Abuja, prompting the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, to order hourly monitoring of seismic activities.

The tremor, which occurred on Tuesday, was detected by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) through its Seismic Monitoring Station in Utako at 11:23:27 a.m.

According to the agency, the tremor originated from a depth of about one kilometre, lasted approximately five seconds, and spread over a distance of about four kilometres. It was classified as a light seismic event, measuring between I and II on the Mercalli Intensity Scale, indicating that it poses no threat to lives or property.

In response, Alake directed the NGSA to provide him with hourly updates on seismic developments in and around Abuja. The minister, who is currently in Washington, D.C., for engagements with potential investors in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, said the monitoring is intended to ensure timely assessment of the situation and facilitate any necessary government response.

He assured residents that the situation was under control, adding that the NGSA would continue monitoring seismic activity and keep the government informed of any significant developments.

The NGSA explained that the tremor was a surface earth tremor, describing it as a natural occurrence that may cause slight shaking and concern among residents but does not present a significant safety risk.

The agency added that such low-intensity events are generally not associated with structural damage, urging the public to remain calm and continue with their normal daily activities.

Authorities say they will maintain close surveillance of the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
