The war between Russia and Ukraine has escalated once again after a devastating Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, reportedly killed at least 24 people, including children, in one of the deadliest attacks on the city this year.

According to Ukrainian officials, the missile attack struck a residential apartment building in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district during what authorities described as Russia’s largest aerial bombardment of the capital since the full-scale invasion began. Rescue workers spent more than 28 hours searching through rubble and destroyed structures as emergency operations continued across the city.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that among those killed were three children, while dozens of others sustained injuries following the strike. The attack reportedly damaged large sections of residential infrastructure, leaving families trapped beneath collapsed buildings and forcing emergency crews into overnight rescue operations.

Images and videos from Kyiv showed heavily damaged apartment blocks, grieving residents, and rescue teams carrying survivors from the wreckage. Authorities later declared an official day of mourning across the city in honour of the victims.

Zelenskyy strongly condemned the attack, accusing Moscow of deliberately targeting civilians and warning that Ukraine would prepare a response to what he described as continued Russian aggression.

“The Russians practically levelled an entire section of the building with their missile,” Zelenskyy said while visiting the attack site and laying flowers in memory of those killed.

The latest assault comes amid renewed fighting and intensifying military operations between both countries despite previous ceasefire discussions and diplomatic efforts supported by Western allies. Analysts say the attack reflects the continued deterioration of hopes for a negotiated settlement to the war, which has now entered another violent phase.

International observers have also expressed concern over the increasing frequency of large-scale missile and drone attacks targeting urban areas, warning of the growing humanitarian consequences for civilians across Ukraine.

The strike on Kyiv has already triggered global reactions, with several Western governments condemning the attack and calling for increased international pressure on Russia. Human rights groups have also renewed concerns over civilian casualties and the destruction of residential infrastructure during the conflict.

The war in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, has resulted in thousands of deaths, mass displacement, and severe economic disruption across Europe and beyond. Despite ongoing sanctions and military aid to Ukraine from Western nations, fighting has continued with both sides intensifying long-range strikes and battlefield operations.

As rescue efforts continue and tensions rise further between Moscow and Kyiv, fears are growing that the conflict could enter an even more dangerous phase with wider geopolitical consequences for Europe and global security.
