ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Across Three Lagos State Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Joint Campus Group for Lagos State-owned universities has declared a total and indefinite strike across the state’s three public universities.

The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

The union said the action took effect immediately following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government on August 31, 2026.

According to ASUU, the September 13 deadline elapsed without satisfactory resolution or a concrete plan from the state government to address its demands.

The declaration was contained in a joint statement signed by ASUU-LASU Coordinator, Olusegun Babalola, Acting Coordinator of ASUU-LASUED, Grace Abimbola, and ASUU-LASUSTECH Chairman, Murisiku Onigemo.

The union said its principal demand is the full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FGN Agreement across all Lagos State-owned universities.

Among the issues raised is the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), alongside welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff.

ASUU said it had previously warned the state government on September 10 that “silence is no longer an option” following the lack of engagement over the demands.

The union described the industrial action as a move aimed at addressing what it considers unresolved issues affecting academic staff and the broader education system in Lagos.

The three university branches said the decision had the backing of the union’s national leadership.

The strike means academic activities at LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH are expected to be disrupted indefinitely until the dispute between the union and the Lagos State Government is resolved.

The development adds to ongoing concerns over funding, staff welfare and implementation of agreements within Nigeria’s public university system.

The Lagos State Government had yet to publicly respond to the latest strike declaration at the time of filing this report.
