20 Killed In Taraba Mining Pit Collapse

At least 20 people, including women and children, have reportedly died after a mining pit collapsed at Mayo Kam community in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon while the victims were reportedly carrying out mining activities at the site.

Residents said the collapse has plunged the community into mourning, with several of those trapped believed to be indigenes of Mayo Kam.

A resident, Kenneth Ayila, who confirmed the incident, said the miners were inside the pit when it suddenly caved in.

According to him, more than 20 people were feared dead in the collapse.

A community leader, Mallam Usman Bello, also confirmed the incident, describing it as a devastating development for Mayo Kam.

He said most of the victims were members of the local community, while only a small number of miners usually came from neighbouring areas.

“We are in total shock over the incident,” Bello said.

However, the Taraba State Police Command said it had not yet received an official report on the incident from its area command in Bali.

Police spokesperson Victor Msherizar said the command would provide further details once a formal report was received.

The incident has renewed concerns over unregulated mining activities in Taraba, particularly amid reports of restrictions on illegal mining operations across the state.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse and confirm the number of casualties as recovery efforts continue.
