Four Miners Reportedly Killed in Plateau Mining Pit Collapse

Four miners have reportedly died after a mining pit collapsed in Baban Rafi, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday while the victims were said to be working inside the pit during tin mining operations.

Daniel Tula, the Bokkos Youth Leader, confirmed the incident to Channels Television, identifying the victims as two men and two women.

According to Tula, the miners were trapped when the pit suddenly caved in and were later buried by their relatives.

He described the incident as the first of its kind in the community and raised concerns about the conditions under which mining activities are being carried out in the area.

Tula said investigations were still ongoing to establish what caused the collapse, but confirmed that the four victims were involved in tin mining when the incident occurred.

However, the Plateau State Police Command said it had not received an official report of the deaths.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said mining-related incidents are sometimes not reported by miners, making it difficult for authorities to promptly verify such cases.

The reported deaths have again drawn attention to the safety challenges facing mining communities in Plateau State, particularly the risks associated with operating in unstable pits and other potentially hazardous mining environments.
