King Charles III has reaffirmed the long-standing alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States during a historic address to the U.S. Congress, urging both nations to remain united despite rising global tensions and disagreements over the ongoing Iran conflict.

Speaking before a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday, King Charles stressed that Britain and America would continue standing together in defense of democracy, security and shared global values.

“Whatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy and protect our people,” the monarch told lawmakers in a speech that received repeated standing ovations.

The address came at a delicate moment in transatlantic relations, as divisions deepen between Washington and London over the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran and broader security issues in the Middle East.

Although Donald Trump has openly criticised European allies and questioned NATO’s relevance in recent months, King Charles used his speech to emphasise the importance of international cooperation and collective defense.

Referencing decades of military partnership between both nations, the British monarch highlighted shared sacrifices during World War I, World War II, the Cold War and the war in Afghanistan. He also urged continued support for Ukrainein its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Observers noted that the king appeared to subtly push back against growing isolationist rhetoric in global politics, warning against becoming “inward-looking” at a time when democratic alliances are under pressure.

The speech marked only the second time a British monarch has addressed the U.S. Congress. The late Queen Elizabeth IIpreviously addressed lawmakers in 1991.

Later during a state banquet at the White House, Trump praised King Charles and claimed the monarch shared his opposition to Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. However, Charles himself avoided directly commenting on Iran during his public remarks, maintaining the British royal family’s traditional political neutrality.

The four-day state visit also included meetings with major American technology leaders, including Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, Jensen Huang and Lisa Su, as Britain seeks stronger investment and technology partnerships with the United States.

King Charles additionally used the occasion to renew his long-standing environmental advocacy, calling on world leaders to protect nature and address climate concerns for future generations.

Meanwhile, the visit has unfolded under the shadow of political controversy, including tensions between Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the Iran war, as well as renewed public discussion surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and its links to members of the British royal family.

Despite the diplomatic strains, both sides publicly projected an image of unity and partnership, with Trump describing the meeting as “a real honor” and praising the British royal family.

Analysts say the visit underscores the importance both nations continue to place on the so-called “special relationship,” even as global crises and political disagreements test the strength of the alliance.
