Nothing Must Happen to Peter Obi, Atiku Warns Against Intimidation of Opposition Leaders

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned the Federal Government against any form of intimidation or harm directed at Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, amid rising political tensions and allegations of pressure on opposition figures.

The former presidential candidate made the remarks in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, stressing that democracy cannot thrive where opposition leaders are intimidated or prevented from exercising their constitutional rights.

Atiku Raises Alarm Over Alleged Political Intimidation

Atiku’s statement comes amid growing public debate over claims that Peter Obi has faced increasing political pressure, including alleged threats to his safety and attempts to frustrate his political engagements and business interests.

Although the Federal Government has not officially responded to the specific allegations, Atiku warned that targeting opposition figures would undermine Nigeria’s democratic institutions and constitutional freedoms.

According to him, every Nigerian—regardless of political affiliation—deserves equal protection under the law.

“Nothing must happen to Peter Obi. An injury to one is an injury to all. When one opposition leader is intimidated, every opposition voice is diminished. When one citizen begins to fear because of his political beliefs, democracy itself becomes the casualty,” Atiku said through Shaibu.

Calls for Protection of Democratic Rights

The former Vice President argued that democracy depends on citizens’ ability to freely express political opinions, participate in public affairs, and hold differing views without fear of intimidation or persecution.

He urged security agencies to remain professional, impartial, and committed to protecting all Nigerians irrespective of their political affiliations.

Atiku also called on the Presidency to ensure that opposition politicians are allowed to operate freely within the confines of the law, warning that any perceived suppression of dissent could further heighten political tensions across the country.

Political Tension Ahead of 2027

The statement adds to a series of exchanges between opposition leaders and the ruling administration as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gradually gather momentum.

In recent months, opposition parties have repeatedly accused the government of using state institutions to weaken political opponents, while government officials have consistently rejected such claims, maintaining that all actions taken by security and regulatory agencies are guided strictly by the law.

Peter Obi has also remained vocal on national issues, frequently criticizing government policies on the economy, governance, and security.

Growing Debate Over Democratic Space

Political observers say Atiku’s latest intervention reflects increasing concerns over the state of Nigeria’s democratic space, particularly regarding freedom of expression, political participation, and the role of opposition parties in strengthening democratic governance.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Presidency or relevant security agencies to Atiku’s latest statement.
