Victor Osimhen has publicly defended his teammate Günay Güvenç following Galatasaray S.K.’s surprising elimination from the Turkish Cup at the hands of Gençlerbirliği S.K..

The Turkish giants suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat in the quarter-final on Wednesday, abruptly ending their title defence in a competition they were widely expected to dominate. The result came as a major upset, especially as Galatasaray had comfortably beaten the same opponents just days earlier in a league fixture.

At the centre of the fallout was veteran goalkeeper Günay Güvenç, whose difficult performance proved costly. Making his 14th appearance of the season and having featured in all of Galatasaray’s cup matches, the 34-year-old endured a night to forget.

The breakthrough came in the 51st minute when Güvenç failed to properly deal with a shot, parrying it into the path of Fıratcan Üzüm, who made no mistake from close range. As Galatasaray pushed forward in search of an equaliser, their vulnerability at the back was exposed again.

A misjudged corner by Güvenç led to the second goal, as he dropped the ball under pressure, gifting an easy finish to Adama Traoré. That moment effectively sealed Galatasaray’s fate, leaving them with a mountain to climb that ultimately proved insurmountable.

The reaction from sections of the home crowd was swift and unforgiving, with boos and whistles echoing around the stadium at full time. Visibly distraught, Güvenç broke down in tears on the pitch and had to be consoled by teammates in an emotional scene that highlighted the human side of elite football.

In the aftermath, Osimhen stepped forward as a leader, using his platform to defend the embattled goalkeeper. Taking to Instagram, the Nigerian striker delivered a strong message of unity and support.

“We stand with Günay Güvenç. One moment doesn’t define a player. Mistakes are part of football. It can never outweigh the effort, commitment, and passion he brings to the team.”

Osimhen further emphasized the importance of solidarity within the squad and appreciation for the fans:

“Football is a game of highs and lows. What truly matters is how we respond and how we support each other through those moments. To our fans, thank you for your support.”

Despite the disappointing result, the match marked a positive personal milestone for Osimhen, who made his return from injury after missing several games. His comeback provides a timely boost for Galatasaray as they refocus their ambitions on domestic league success.

Attention now shifts to the Turkish Super League title race, where Galatasaray remain in pole position. They currently sit top of the table with 71 points, holding a four-point lead over fierce rivals Fenerbahçe S.K. with just four matches left to play.

All eyes will be on their next fixture — a high-stakes clash against Fenerbahçe at RAMS Park on Sunday. With the title race tightening, the encounter could prove decisive in determining the destination of the league trophy.

For Galatasaray, the challenge now is clear: put the disappointment behind them, rally as a team, and finish the season strong.
