Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umaru Radda, has ordered the immediate rehabilitation of two collapsed earth dams located in Kore village, Batagarawa Local Government Area, and Majen Wayya in Charanchi Local Government Area of the state.

The directive was issued on Wednesday at the Government House in Katsina during a meeting with a high-powered delegation of political and community stakeholders, including members of the ADC and PDP who formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the governor, the collapse of the dams represents a serious setback to agricultural activities and rural livelihoods in the affected communities, where thousands of farmers depend heavily on irrigation water for dry-season farming and food production.

He instructed the State Ministry of Water Resources to immediately commence a detailed technical assessment of the damaged structures as a critical first step toward full rehabilitation. The assessment, he said, would help determine the extent of damage and guide engineering solutions for restoring the dams to full functionality.

Radda emphasized that water infrastructure remains central to his administration’s agricultural development agenda, noting that Katsina State cannot achieve food security without reliable irrigation systems and sustainable water management.

He stressed that the dams are not just physical structures but essential economic assets that support farming communities, livestock production, and rural economic stability.

“We must act quickly to restore these dams because our farmers depend on them for their livelihoods,” the governor said. “Agriculture remains central to our development agenda, and water infrastructure is key to achieving that goal.”

He further assured residents that his administration will prioritize all issues affecting the welfare, productivity, and economic well-being of citizens across the state.

According to him, the government will not overlook any challenge that threatens food production or rural development, adding that efforts are already underway to strengthen infrastructure across key agricultural zones.

The governor also reiterated his commitment to improving irrigation systems and expanding agricultural opportunities as part of broader efforts to reduce poverty and increase food supply in the state.

On the political front, Radda welcomed the defectors into the APC, assuring them of equal treatment, inclusion, and full integration into the party structure.

He urged all political actors to focus on unity and development, noting that governance and service delivery should remain the priority over partisan differences.

Political observers say the rehabilitation of the dams aligns with ongoing efforts by the Katsina State Government to strengthen agriculture as a major pillar of the state’s economy, particularly at a time when food security challenges remain a national concern.

Residents of the affected communities have also expressed hope that the governor’s directive will lead to swift action, as many farmers continue to face difficulties accessing water for their farmlands following the collapse of the dams.
