Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Abbas made the call on Monday in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Musa Abdullahi Krishi.
The Speaker described the deaths as deeply troubling and potentially preventable, while expressing condolences to the Niger State Government and the families affected by the incident.
He stressed the need for all investigations into the deaths to be conducted openly and with accountability, saying this would help ease tensions surrounding the incident.
Abbas said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for an investigation should lead to a clear understanding of what happened and result in measures to prevent a recurrence.
According to him, the investigation should also examine issues including overcrowding in custodial facilities, operational procedures, the treatment and rights of detainees, as well as the welfare of people held in custody.
The Speaker said the findings should not only establish responsibility where necessary but also provide lasting solutions to weaknesses identified in the handling of suspects in detention.
He also praised Niger State Governor Umar Mohammed Bago for taking steps to prevent protests over the incident from escalating into a wider breakdown of law and order.
Abbas equally commended Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu for their swift response following the deaths.
The Speaker urged relevant authorities to ensure that the ongoing investigations are thorough and that appropriate measures are implemented based on their findings.
