UNICEF Applauds Yobe Government’s Success in Preventing Cholera Outbreak

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has praised the Yobe State Government for its proactive measures in preventing a cholera outbreak, describing the state’s public health preparedness as exemplary.

The commendation was made by UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Maiduguri, Mr. Francis Butucci, during an advocacy visit to the Acting Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Mohammed Goje, at the Governor’s Office in Damaturu.

According to a statement by the Media Coordinator and Liaison Office of the SSG, Ibrahim Baba Saleh, Mr. Butucci noted that despite the heightened risk of cholera during the rainy season, Yobe has not recorded any confirmed case of the disease. He attributed the achievement to the state’s early preventive interventions, effective disease surveillance, and sustained public health awareness campaigns.

He also commended the government for implementing UNICEF’s technical recommendations, saying the partnership has continued to strengthen healthcare delivery and disease prevention efforts across the state.

Mr. Butucci encouraged the government to maintain the momentum by expanding birth registration services at Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) and supporting schools recently damaged by windstorms.

In his response, Dr. Mohammed Goje expressed appreciation for UNICEF’s continued collaboration with the Yobe State Government in healthcare, education, nutrition, child protection, and social development.

He also lauded UNICEF’s support in establishing a state-of-the-art oxygen gas plant in the state, describing it as a major milestone that has enhanced the capacity of health facilities to provide life-saving medical services and improve healthcare delivery across Yobe.
