13 Killed, 75 Injured in Ukrainian Drone Strike on Russia’s Tatarstan

Thirteen people have been killed and 75 others injured following a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s Tatarstan region, according to Russian authorities.

The attack targeted industrial facilities in Nizhnekamsk, a major energy-producing city located more than 1,100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. A child was among those killed, while citizens of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan were also reported to be among the casualties.

Ukraine’s Armed Forces confirmed that an oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk was hit during the operation. The Ukrainian General Staff identified the facility as the Taneco refinery, operated by Russian oil giant Tatneft.

Ukrainian defence technology company FirePoint said its FP-1 drones were used in the strike.

The strike continued for several hours from overnight into the early morning, with footage circulating online showing thick smoke and flames rising from the affected facility. The extent of the damage could not be independently confirmed.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said civilian areas were also affected, with people who were not involved in military operations among those present at the time of the attack.

Tatarstan leader Rustam Minnikhanov confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the families of those who died. Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belayev described the loss of life as a major tragedy.

Authorities subsequently declared a period of mourning in the region.

Ukraine said the operation was part of its broader campaign to weaken Russia’s military capacity by targeting energy infrastructure linked to the war effort.

The Taneco refinery had previously come under attack on June 12, as Kyiv has increasingly relied on long-range drones to strike strategic facilities deep inside Russian territory.

Russia, meanwhile, said its air defence systems intercepted or destroyed more than 450 Ukrainian drones during the overnight attacks.

The latest incident comes as both countries continue to exchange increasingly extensive aerial strikes. Ukraine has stepped up attacks against Russian oil facilities and other strategic infrastructure, while Russia continues to launch large-scale drone and missile attacks against Ukrainian cities.

A recent Russian strike on Kyiv killed 21 people, while an artillery attack on Kharkiv left five people dead, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The escalation has further intensified concerns over civilian safety as the conflict continues, with both sides expanding the scale and reach of their military operations.
