The political temperature in Abia State is steadily rising as mounting endorsements and grassroots mobilisation continue to push the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, closer to a potential bid for the state’s governorship in 2027.

In what appears to be a coordinated political movement, leaders and stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency have thrown their weight behind Kalu, urging him to contest for the state’s top office. The call adds to a growing wave of support from key blocs across Abia, positioning the lawmaker as a central figure in the state’s emerging political equation.

Rising Support from the Ngwa Bloc

The endorsement, according to a statement by Kalu’s Special Assistant on Press Affairs, Udora Orizu, reflects a broader mobilisation within the influential Ngwa political axis. Often regarded as a decisive voting bloc in Abia politics, the region’s backing signals a potentially significant shift ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The show of support came during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Uzoma Ihuka for the House of Representatives seat representing Isiala Ngwa Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress.

Stakeholders at the event described Kalu as a “unifying figure” with the political experience and reach needed to reposition Abia, citing his growing influence both within the state and at the national level.

Kalu’s Strategic Silence

While acknowledging the calls, Kalu stopped short of making a formal declaration, choosing instead to maintain a measured stance.

“I have received your request… but I will respond in the coming days,” he said, noting that he intends to address the growing demand in a more coordinated manner rather than on a piecemeal, local basis.

This calculated response has only intensified speculation, with political observers suggesting that his eventual declaration could significantly reshape Abia’s political landscape.

APC’s Growing Confidence

Kalu also used the platform to express confidence in the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that reforms introduced by the ruling party have strengthened the APC’s national standing.

According to him, while opposition parties grapple with internal divisions, the APC remains focused on governance and long-term development. He argued that ongoing federal reforms could unlock new opportunities for Abia, particularly if aligned with state-level leadership.

The Deputy Speaker further assured party loyalists of inclusive governance, pledging a people-centered approach that prioritises grassroots engagement and responsiveness to local needs.

Grassroots Mobilisation Intensifies

Behind the scenes, Kalu has ramped up political consultations and grassroots outreach across key regions including Bende, Obingwa, and the Ngwa axis. These efforts are widely seen as part of a broader strategy to consolidate support ahead of a possible governorship run.

The moves also align with renewed efforts by the APC to expand its footprint in Abia, a state currently governed by Alex Otti of the Labour Party.

A Looming Political Showdown

Despite the growing momentum behind Kalu, Governor Otti has continued to defend his administration’s record, pointing to ongoing reforms and infrastructure projects aimed at revitalising the state’s economy.

However, political undercurrents suggest that the 2027 race could evolve into a high-stakes contest between the incumbent’s camp and a reinvigorated opposition.

With endorsements gaining traction and political structures gradually aligning, Kalu’s anticipated decision is expected to be a defining moment—one that could set the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested governorship election.
