Fresh political tension is gradually building within Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), as prominent stakeholders and founding members warn against what they describe as the increasing marginalization of loyal party members in favor of new defectors ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The growing concerns come amid a steady wave of defections into the APC from opposition parties across the country. While the defections have been celebrated by party leaders as a sign of the APC’s expanding political dominance, some long-time members say the development is beginning to create uncertainty and frustration within the party’s internal structure.

Several party loyalists have reportedly expressed fears that individuals who recently joined the APC are already being considered for influential political appointments, strategic party positions, and electoral opportunities, while those who worked to build and sustain the party over the years are being overlooked.

Stakeholders within the party have cautioned that sidelining founding members could trigger internal divisions capable of weakening the APC’s unity ahead of the next election cycle. According to them, loyalty, commitment, and years of political investment should not be sacrificed for short-term political gains or the attraction of high-profile defections.

The issue has further exposed ongoing power struggles within the APC as different political blocs attempt to strengthen their influence ahead of 2027. Analysts believe the competition for control of party structures at both state and national levels is already intensifying, with many politicians positioning themselves early for future contests.

Some party leaders have urged the APC leadership to carefully manage the integration of new members to avoid creating resentment among existing loyalists. They argue that while political expansion is important, maintaining internal balance and rewarding long-standing members remains critical to preserving party stability.

The tension also reflects the broader political atmosphere in Nigeria, where alliances, defections, and negotiations are expected to shape the road to the 2027 elections. With opposition parties facing internal challenges of their own, the APC’s ability to maintain unity may play a significant role in determining its future electoral strength.

Despite the concerns, APC officials continue to insist that the party remains united and focused on governance and national development. Party leaders have repeatedly assured members that all stakeholders would be carried along as preparations for future elections gradually begin.

Political observers, however, believe the coming months may reveal deeper divisions within the ruling party if grievances raised by long-time members are not addressed quickly.
