The Federal Government has commended the Kano State Government for its extensive investment in education, describing its reforms as a model for human capital development in Nigeria.
Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, gave the commendation during the presentation of appointment letters to 8,588 newly recruited teachers and education personnel at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium in Kano.
Alausa praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration for allocating more than 31 per cent of the state’s budget to education, saying the commitment demonstrates a strong resolve to improve teaching and learning across the state.
According to the minister, the government’s investment in education is expected to expand access to quality learning, reduce the number of out-of-school children and improve educational outcomes.
The recruitment exercise includes 4,900 permanent primary and secondary school teachers and 3,688 facilitators absorbed from the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme. State officials said more than 13,600 teachers have been employed since May 2023.
Also speaking at the event, Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Aisha Garba, said the recruitment would help address teacher shortages and improve the pupil-to-teacher ratio in public schools.
The state government has also invested in improving learning facilities by renovating classrooms, providing more than 80,000 three-seater desks, covering examination fees for over 57,000 indigent students, distributing free school uniforms and reopening boarding schools.
Governor Yusuf said his administration’s declaration of a state of emergency in education was aimed at delivering lasting reforms rather than symbolic measures.
Governor Yusuf urged the newly recruited teachers to remain committed to professionalism and excellence, noting that quality education is essential to the state’s future development.
