Former Opposition Figure Says APC Offers Better Path for Nigeria’s Future

ABUJA, Nigeria  A prominent political ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has defected from the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what she described as the opposition’s inability to present a credible roadmap for national development ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dr. Aslam Aliyu, a leading opposition figure from Zamfara State and former coordinator of the Project Atiku Abubakar (PAA) 2027 campaign, announced her resignation from the ADC in a statement released in Abuja.

Aliyu said her decision came after nearly two decades of political involvement within Atiku Abubakar’s camp.

“After almost two decades of dedicated engagement, it has become clear that the opposition lacks a meaningful development blueprint and a sustainable rescue plan for Nigeria,” she stated.

Why She Left the ADC

Aliyu argued that opposition politics should focus on providing practical solutions rather than constant criticism of the government.

According to her, Nigeria’s current political realities require leaders who can deliver measurable progress.

She urged Nigerian youths, women, and what she described as “forward-thinking politicians” to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC ahead of the next general election.

Aliyu also expressed confidence that Tinubu would secure a second term in office in 2027.

“There is no vacancy in Aso Rock in 2027,” she declared.

APC Welcomes New Member

The National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwatda, welcomed Aliyu into the ruling party, describing her decision as a positive step.

In a statement shared on social media, Yilwatda said:

“You have made the right decision by joining millions of progressives committed to advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Political Significance

Aliyu had been one of Atiku Abubakar’s most visible political supporters in Zamfara State and played a key role in mobilising support for the former vice president ahead of the 2027 elections.

Her defection comes amid growing political realignments as parties intensify preparations for the next electoral cycle.

The move also follows recent reports of several politicians leaving the ADC and other opposition parties over concerns about internal leadership, strategy and electoral prospects.

While Aliyu has now aligned with the APC, neither Atiku Abubakar nor the African Democratic Congress had publicly responded to her defection at the time of filing this report.
