Billionaire Investor to Step Down in August as UBA Announces Leadership Transition

LAGOS, Nigeria  Nigerian billionaire businessman and investor Tony Elumelu will step down as Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) after 15 years at the helm, marking the end of a transformative era for one of Africa’s largest banking groups.

According to a statement released by UBA, Elumelu’s retirement will take effect on August 21, 2026, following the completion of the maximum tenure for non-executive directors as stipulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The bank also announced the appointment of Emmanuel Nnorom, a current non-executive director, as the incoming Group Chairman.


End of a Transformational Era

Since assuming the role in 2011, Elumelu has overseen UBA’s expansion into one of Africa’s leading financial institutions, with operations in more than 20 African countries as well as the United Kingdom, France, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

In a statement, UBA praised Elumelu’s leadership and contribution to the institution’s growth.

“The Board places on record its profound appreciation to Tony Elumelu for his visionary leadership and exceptional contribution to the strategic vision and institutional strength of the UBA Group.”

Although leaving the board as chairman, Elumelu remains one of the bank’s largest and most influential shareholders.
