Bandits Target Displaced Families in Fresh Sokoto Attack

A fresh wave of insecurity has struck Sokoto State after armed bandits reportedly abducted several internally displaced persons (IDPs) during an attack on a settlement, intensifying concerns over the safety of vulnerable communities in Nigeria’s North-West.

According to local sources, the victims had previously fled their homes to escape persistent attacks by armed criminal groups. However, they were reportedly targeted again when gunmen invaded the area, forcing residents to flee while abducting an unspecified number of people.

Witnesses said the attackers stormed the community unexpectedly, creating panic among displaced families already struggling to rebuild their lives. Many residents escaped into nearby bushes, but several others were reportedly taken into the surrounding forest.

As of the time of reporting, authorities had not officially confirmed the number of people abducted.

The latest incident adds to growing concerns over the continued activities of armed bandits across Sokoto and neighbouring North-West states, where communities have faced repeated kidnappings, killings, cattle rustling, and forced displacement despite ongoing security operations.

Security analysts have long warned that many IDP camps and informal settlements remain exposed to attacks because of limited security presence, leaving displaced families vulnerable even after fleeing their communities.

Community leaders and residents have called on federal and state authorities to strengthen security around displacement camps and vulnerable settlements while intensifying efforts to rescue those abducted and prevent further attacks.

Security agencies were yet to release a detailed statement on the incident, although reports indicate that operatives have commenced efforts to assess the situation and track down the attackers.
