With just days to the June 20 governorship election in Ekiti State, security agencies and electoral officials have intensified preparations to ensure a peaceful, credible, and transparent poll.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday commenced the distribution of sensitive election materials across the state’s 16 local government areas, marking a crucial stage in preparations for the highly anticipated off-cycle election.

To strengthen security, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed about 10,000 personnel, while the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies have activated a comprehensive security framework designed to protect voters, election officials, and critical electoral infrastructure during the exercise.

The Nigerian Air Force has also assisted in logistics by airlifting sensitive election materials, underscoring efforts by authorities to ensure timely delivery and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

INEC officials have repeatedly assured residents that the commission is fully prepared for the election. According to the electoral body, all necessary logistics, including Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices and trained personnel, have been put in place to guarantee a smooth voting process.

The commission has also identified 469 polling units across the state as potential flashpoints and has shared intelligence with security agencies for enhanced monitoring and deployment.

Ahead of the election, political parties and candidates signed a peace accord, committing themselves to a violence-free campaign and election process. Security agencies have warned against vote buying, voter intimidation, and other forms of electoral misconduct.

The Inspector-General of Police has assured Nigerians that adequate security arrangements are in place and that officers deployed for election duties will maintain professionalism throughout the exercise.

The Ekiti governorship election is widely seen as a major test for Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections. Observers believe the conduct of the poll will provide important insights into the preparedness of electoral authorities, security agencies, and political stakeholders for future nationwide elections.

1960 Republic reports that with sensitive materials now being distributed and thousands of security personnel deployed across the state, attention is turning to Saturday’s vote as Ekiti residents prepare to choose their next governor.
