The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive election materials across all 16 local government areas of Ekiti State ahead of the governorship election, setting the stage for more than one million registered voters to choose the state’s next leader.

INEC officials confirmed that electoral materials were moved under tight security from the Central Bank and designated storage facilities to local government offices across the state. The exercise is part of the commission’s final preparations for the highly anticipated poll.

The governorship election is expected to be one of the most closely watched political contests in Nigeria this year, with major political parties intensifying their campaigns and mobilising supporters across the state.

Security Tightened Across the State

Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other personnel, have been deployed to ensure a peaceful and credible election.

Authorities have assured residents that adequate measures have been put in place to prevent electoral violence, voter intimidation, ballot snatching, and other forms of malpractice that could undermine the integrity of the process.

The police have also warned political actors and supporters against actions capable of disrupting public order during the election period.

INEC officials say logistics arrangements have been completed to ensure the timely delivery of materials to polling units across the state. The commission has urged voters to come out peacefully, verify their polling units, and participate actively in the democratic process.

Election observers and civil society groups are also expected to monitor the exercise to ensure compliance with electoral laws and promote transparency throughout the voting process.

The election is widely seen as a crucial political test ahead of the 2027 general elections, with analysts closely watching voter turnout, party performance, and the conduct of the poll.

Political parties have intensified last-minute campaigns as they seek to secure support from voters across the state’s urban and rural communities.

With over one million registered voters expected to participate, the Ekiti governorship election represents a significant moment for democracy in the state. The outcome could shape the state’s political direction and provide insight into broader electoral trends ahead of future national elections.

INEC’s distribution of election materials across the 16 local government areas signals the final phase of preparations as Ekiti voters prepare to head to the polls to elect their next governor.
