Enugu Air Secures Approval for Lagos-London Gatwick Route, Begins Flights in December

Enugu State-owned airline, Enugu Air, has received approval to operate flights between Lagos and London Gatwick Airport, marking a major step in its plans to expand into international aviation.

The airline secured the approval through a strategic partnership with private aviation company Omni-Blu Aviation (OBA), which has been appointed as the designated operator for the route.

In a statement announcing the development, Enugu Air disclosed that flight bookings were already open, with commercial operations scheduled to commence in December 2026.

The airline said the approval would strengthen air connectivity between Nigeria and the United Kingdom while creating additional opportunities for passenger movement, trade and economic cooperation.

It also described the development as part of its broader expansion strategy to establish Enugu as an important destination for international aviation, tourism and investment.

Enugu Air attributed the milestone to the aviation development agenda of Governor Peter Mbah, whose administration has prioritised the expansion of the state’s aviation sector as part of its economic growth plans.

Industry observers say the development reflects a growing interest among state governments in using aviation to improve connectivity, attract investors and support economic activities within their regions.

With the approval, Enugu Air becomes the first state-owned airline in Nigeria to receive designation for an intercontinental route.

Another state-backed carrier, Ibom Air, has also expanded its operations beyond domestic services, operating regional flights from its hub in Uyo to destinations across West and Central Africa.

The planned Lagos-London service represents a significant development for Enugu Air as it seeks to establish a presence in the international aviation market through its partnership with Omni-Blu Aviation.
