Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has launched the construction of the Ikot Ekpene International Market, describing the project as an investment designed to expand economic opportunities, create jobs and promote prosperity in the state.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in Ikot Ekpene, Eno said the market would serve not only as a centre for commercial activities but also as a platform for interaction, innovation and economic growth.

The governor said the project would provide traders and young people with new opportunities while strengthening commercial activities in the area.

Eno described the ceremony as the final event in the series of activities marking Akwa Ibom State’s 39th anniversary.

He said his administration had delivered 39 projects as part of the anniversary celebrations, adding that the commissioning of the projects provided an opportunity to present its development record to residents.

According to the governor, nine additional projects have been set aside for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu at a later date.

He also disclosed that more projects would be inaugurated between December 2026 and May 29, 2027.

Eno, who noted that his administration had spent about three and a half years in office, urged residents to evaluate its performance based on its record of strategy, accountability, commitment and character.

He said the impact of government programmes had been felt across the state’s 31 local government areas, particularly among traders, young people and elderly residents.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for young Akwa Ibom residents to compete effectively in both Nigerian and international markets.

The Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Capt. Iniobong Ekong (retd.), described the international market as a strategic investment aimed at advancing trade, tourism and economic development in the state.

The project is expected to strengthen commercial activities in Ikot Ekpene while creating additional opportunities for businesses and residents.

The Paramount Ruler of Ikot Ekpene, Akuku Okon Udo Ukut, also delivered a goodwill message at the ceremony and prayed for continued protection and guidance for Governor Eno and members of his administration.
