Hamzat Secures Key Endorsements Ahead of 2027 Lagos Governorship Race

The 2027 Lagos governorship race is gradually taking shape as Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat received a significant political boost following endorsements from top All Progressives Congress (APC) figures, including former Finance Minister Wale Edun and Senator Tokunbo Abiru.

The endorsements came during separate consultation visits by Hamzat to the residences of both leaders, as part of ongoing stakeholder engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.

Hamzat, who is widely seen as a potential successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the visits were in line with democratic traditions within the APC, emphasising the importance of inclusiveness and consensus-building in party politics.

“Consultations are part of the democratic process. It is important that we carry everyone along and strengthen unity within the party,” Hamzat stated.

Responding to the visit, Senator Abiru described the consultations as a reflection of the APC’s core values of discipline and cohesion, expressing strong confidence in Hamzat’s leadership capacity.

“You have our full support,” Abiru declared, noting that the deputy governor possesses the experience and vision required to govern Lagos State effectively.

Similarly, Wale Edun praised the consultation process as a demonstration of grassroots democracy, stressing that such engagement is essential in sustaining a vibrant political system.

“You have our endorsement. You have the capacity, experience, and competence to lead,” Edun said.

The former minister also advised Hamzat to prioritise policies aimed at poverty reduction and sustained economic growth, while commending the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu.

Also present during the visit was Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who lauded Edun’s longstanding contributions to the APC and his role in shaping the party’s direction in Lagos.

Political analysts say the endorsements signal growing internal support for Hamzat within the APC, particularly among influential stakeholders whose backing could prove decisive in the party’s candidate selection process.

With consultations still ongoing, observers note that early alignments such as these are likely to play a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of the Lagos governorship race, as aspirants continue to build alliances ahead of 2027.
