Investigation Launched After Nigerian Dies in South African Police Custody

South African authorities have launched an investigation into the death of a Nigerian national who died while in police custody following an arrest operation in the Sunnyside precinct of Tshwane, Pretoria.

The incident occurred during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Tshwane Drugs Team, raising fresh concerns among members of the Nigerian community in South Africa.

According to SAPS, officers were carrying out a search operation at an apartment complex in Sunnyside when they arrested the Nigerian man on allegations of drug possession.

Police said the suspect collapsed shortly after being handcuffed while officers were preparing to transport him to the police station. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene but pronounced him dead on arrival.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), the agency responsible for investigating deaths in police custody, has since opened a formal inquiry into the incident.

Police said a formal inquest has been opened, while investigations into evidence recovered during the operation are also ongoing. Detectives and IPID investigators have attended the post-mortem examination, with officials saying the cause of death will be determined through the findings of the pathology report.

The incident has prompted reactions from the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) and other community leaders, who have called for a transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Community representatives urged the authorities to ensure accountability and provide clarity on the events leading to the incident, while appealing to Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm as investigations continue.

The death comes amid ongoing concerns over the treatment of foreign nationals during law enforcement operations in parts of South Africa. Rights groups have repeatedly called for strict adherence to human rights standards and due process during police activities.

South African police have urged the public to avoid speculation, stressing that the outcome of the investigation will depend on the findings of the independent inquiry.
