Nigeria Upgrades e-Passport Security With ICAO Public Key Directory Membership

The integration was completed during an official ceremony at ICAO headquarters in Montreal, Canada, placing Nigeria among countries participating in the international passport authentication system used by border control agencies around the world.

The achievement enables immigration authorities in participating countries to electronically verify the authenticity of Nigerian e-passports through encrypted digital authentication, reducing dependence on manual inspections and improving processing times at international borders.

The Nigerian delegation to the event was led by the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nanna Nandap.

In a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI AS Akinlabi, the NIS said the development resolves long-standing verification issues associated with Nigerian e-passports and marks another step in the country’s efforts to align with international travel security standards.

The ICAO Public Key Directory serves as a secure global database where member states exchange the digital certificates needed to authenticate electronic travel documents. Before Nigeria joined the platform, some foreign border systems were unable to automatically validate the security credentials embedded in Nigerian e-passports, occasionally resulting in additional document checks.

With Nigeria’s certificates now uploaded to the directory, border control systems in participating countries can instantly confirm the authenticity of Nigerian travel documents, improving security while making international travel more efficient for passport holders.

The integration is also expected to strengthen global cooperation in border management by making it easier for authorities to distinguish genuine passports from fraudulent documents.

The Federal Government said the achievement supports ongoing reforms led by the Ministry of Interior to modernise the country’s immigration system, enhance identity management, and improve Nigeria’s compliance with international aviation and border security standards.

Officials believe the development will increase international confidence in Nigerian passports, simplify cross-border travel for citizens, and reinforce Nigeria’s position within the global travel and security framework.
