NiMet Warns Lagos, Coastal States of Flash Floods as Heavy Rainfall Continues

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather advisory warning residents of Lagos and several coastal states to prepare for possible flash floods as heavy rainfall is expected to persist across southern Nigeria on Tuesday.

According to NiMet’s Weather Outlook for June 30, 2026, widespread rainfall is forecast throughout the day, with coastal and low-lying communities facing an increased risk of flooding due to continuous downpours.

The agency said thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected during the morning hours in parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

As the day progresses, rainfall is expected to intensify, with moderate rainfall forecast across the entire southern region. NiMet warned that the prolonged showers could trigger flash floods, particularly in coastal areas including Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

Northern, North Central States Also Expected to Experience Storms

In northern Nigeria, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in parts of Borno, Adamawa and Taraba states, with the weather system expected to extend later in the day to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Yobe, Gombe and Kebbi states.

The North Central region is also expected to experience predominantly cloudy skies in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa and Benue states. Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is forecast across the region later in the day

Safety Advisory

NiMet urged residents in affected areas to remain alert and monitor weather updates, warning that strong winds could precede thunderstorms.

The agency advised motorists to drive carefully during heavy rainfall due to reduced visibility and slippery roads, while residents were cautioned against walking or driving through flooded areas.

It also warned the public to avoid taking shelter under tall trees during thunderstorms because of the risk of lightning strikes.

For the aviation industry, NiMet advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports before flight operations to ensure passenger safety and operational efficiency.
