The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on violent crime, with the arrest of a suspected notorious kidnapper identified as Ubong Michael, popularly known as “Ubong Boy.”

The suspect, who had long been on the police wanted list, was apprehended following what authorities described as a coordinated intelligence-driven operation within Uyo on Thursday.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, the command confirmed that the arrest led to the recovery of disturbing items, including a human skull, suspected human bones, live cartridges, and a dagger believed to have been used in criminal activities.

According to the statement, the suspect is alleged to be a key figure in a network linked to kidnapping and other violent crimes across parts of Akwa Ibom State. His name had surfaced repeatedly during investigations into recent abduction cases, prompting intensified efforts by security agencies to track him down.

“The arrest of the suspect marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements. Exhibits recovered during the operation raise serious concerns and are currently undergoing forensic examination,” the statement read.

Security sources hinted that the presence of human remains among the recovered items has raised suspicions of ritual-related activities, a growing concern in parts of southern Nigeria where kidnapping for ransom has, in some cases, intersected with ritual killings. However, police authorities have cautioned that investigations are still ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s operations and affiliations.

In recent years, Akwa Ibom has experienced a worrying rise in kidnapping incidents, with criminal gangs targeting residents, business owners, and commuters for ransom. The state government, in collaboration with security agencies, has since intensified surveillance, community policing initiatives, and intelligence gathering to curb the menace.

The arrest of “Ubong Boy” is expected to provide critical leads that could aid in dismantling broader criminal networks operating within the state and beyond. Police authorities have also indicated that further arrests may follow as investigations deepen.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and continue to cooperate with law enforcement by providing timely and credible information. The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property, assuring the public that no effort would be spared in bringing perpetrators of violent crimes to justice.

Meanwhile, the suspect remains in custody and is expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
