A Nigerian-born physician based in the United States, Dr. Uzoma Nwaubani, has tragically passed away after suffering a sudden medical emergency while participating in a free healthcare outreach in Abia State.

The incident occurred during a five-day medical mission held between April 13 and April 17, 2026, jointly organised by the Abia State Government and the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA). The programme was designed to provide free and accessible healthcare services to underserved communities across the state.

Dr. Nwaubani, who was part of the visiting medical team, had travelled to Nigeria with her husband and daughter—who is a final-year medical student in the United States—on what was described as a family-driven humanitarian mission.

According to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, the doctor developed a sudden health complication while actively participating in the outreach. She was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility where emergency treatment was administered.

A combined team of ANPA specialists and local medical personnel reportedly worked tirelessly to stabilise her condition. Despite these efforts, she sadly could not be revived.

Governor Otti described her death as a painful loss, noting that Dr. Nwaubani embodied compassion, service, and dedication to humanity. He extended condolences to her family, colleagues, and the wider medical community, assuring that the state government is in contact with her loved ones and will provide necessary support.

He also praised the resilience of her family and fellow medical volunteers, stating that the outreach programme continued in her honour as a tribute to her commitment to saving lives.

The sudden passing of Dr. Nwaubani has cast a sombre mood over the initiative, even as beneficiaries continue to reflect on the life-changing medical services delivered during the outreach.
