Senate Probes Suspected COVID-19 Outbreak in Nigeria

Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber has launched an urgent investigation into reports of a possible resurgence of COVID-19, raising fresh concerns about public health preparedness years after the pandemic’s peak.

The Nigerian Senate directed its Committee on Health to probe the situation following conflicting reports about new infections, particularly in Cross River State. Godswill Akpabio issued the directive during plenary, mandating the committee to verify the claims and report back promptly.  

What Triggered the Investigation?

The move comes amid reports suggesting multiple fresh COVID-19 cases in Cross River. However, state authorities and health officials have pushed back against those claims, clarifying that only one confirmed case has been recorded so far.  

The confirmed case involves a 53-year-old foreign national who entered Nigeria in March 2026, later developed symptoms, and tested positive in April. He is currently receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.  

Health authorities also revealed that initial confusion may have arisen from contact tracing efforts, where about 10 individuals linked to the patient were mistakenly reported as additional cases.  

Role of Health Authorities

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), alongside the Cross River State Ministry of Health, has assured the public that there is no evidence of widespread community transmission at this time.  

The Senate’s investigation will be handled by its health committee, chaired by Senator Ipalibo Banigo, which is responsible for oversight of Nigeria’s public health sector and policy response.

The probe underscores growing vigilance as Nigeria seeks to prevent a repeat of the devastating impact of the pandemic, which first hit the country in 2020.

While the current situation appears contained, lawmakers are taking a precautionary approach to:

Authorities continue to urge calm, emphasizing that Nigeria’s disease monitoring systems remain active and capable of responding to isolated cases.

The Senate committee is expected to present its findings within days, which could determine whether further measures are needed to safeguard public health.

For now, experts stress that vigilance , not panic is the appropriate response.
