The European Union (EU) and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold electoral laws and ensure a transparent process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, urged INEC to build on its performance during the recent Osun State governorship election and work towards delivering credible elections in 2027.
Mignot made the call on Tuesday in Abuja at a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders Meeting organised by INEC as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.
He said credible elections were essential to reducing the risk of post-election violence, adding that the EU’s interest was in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process and protecting the welfare of Nigerians rather than supporting any political party or candidate.
According to the ambassador, the EU remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s democratic development and will continue to engage with relevant stakeholders ahead of the elections.
Mignot stressed that adherence to electoral rules by INEC and other participants would be critical to building public confidence in the process.
He said the EU had already announced plans to deploy an Electoral Expert Mission to Nigeria for the 2027 general elections as part of its continued engagement with the country’s electoral process.
Also speaking at the meeting, IPAC National Chairman, Yusuf Mamman Dantelle, urged INEC to maintain neutrality throughout the election process.
Dantelle also called on security agencies deployed for the elections to remain impartial and reject attempts to use them for political purposes.
He said INEC, security agencies and other stakeholders must carry out their responsibilities professionally and within the provisions of the law to strengthen Nigerians’ trust in the electoral system.
The IPAC chairman emphasised that all actors in the electoral process must avoid bias and work collectively towards elections that are free, fair and credible.
He also stressed the importance of cooperation among INEC, political parties, security agencies and other stakeholders in ensuring a transparent and peaceful 2027 general election.
