David Mark Condemns Benue Bus Kidnapping, Fresh Killings, Demands Immediate Security Action

National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has strongly condemned the abduction of passengers aboard a Benue Links bus along the Otukpo–Taraku–Makurdi Road, calling on security agencies to launch an immediate rescue operation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Mark also decried the recent killings of 16 people in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State and nine others in Plateau State, describing the attacks as “barbaric, senseless and unacceptable.”

In a statement issued by his media aide, Kola Ologbondiyan, the former Senate President expressed concern over the resurgence of violent attacks across parts of the country, warning that the continued bloodshed threatens national security and social stability.

He called on the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the kidnapped passengers and dismantle criminal groups responsible for the attacks.

According to Mark, intelligence gathering, sustained surveillance of vulnerable communities and highways, and the rapid deployment of security personnel to identified flashpoints are critical to curbing the violence.

“It is unacceptable that innocent Nigerians continue to be slaughtered in their communities while others are abducted on our highways,” Mark said.

“The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. Every life lost is one too many, and every attack that goes unanswered only emboldens the perpetrators.”

The ADC chairman stressed that those behind the killings and kidnappings must be identified, arrested and prosecuted without delay, arguing that the prevailing culture of impunity has encouraged repeated attacks.

He urged the Federal Government to treat the worsening security situation in Benue with greater urgency, noting that communities have endured persistent violence for years.

“No Nigerian community should be abandoned to the mercy of armed criminals and violent militias,” he said.

Mark also appealed to the Benue State Government, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and community stakeholders to strengthen collaboration with security agencies by providing credible intelligence capable of preventing future attacks.

While mourning the victims, he extended condolences to bereaved families and wished those injured a speedy recovery. He also expressed hope that the abducted passengers would be rescued safely and reunited with their loved ones.

“The blood of innocent Benue people cries out for justice,” Mark stated.

“This is the time for decisive action, not routine assurances. Those who murder innocent citizens and terrorise our communities must face the full weight of the law.”

He reaffirmed his solidarity with the people of Benue State and called on Nigerians to reject violence and support efforts aimed at restoring peace and security across the country.
