Police officers on Tuesday fired tear gas to disperse residents, journalists and political figures gathered at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos for a memorial marking the victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Among those present at the gathering were the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate, Funso Doherty.

The memorial was organised by the Enough is Enough movement to honour those who lost their lives during the #EndSARS protests, which began as demonstrations against police brutality and demands for reforms in the Nigeria Police Force.

The event was disrupted before participants could carry out a planned wreath-laying ceremony, as police officers deployed to the tollgate fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.

Footage shared by TheCable showed participants scrambling for safety as tear gas spread across the gathering area.

The police action prevented the memorial organisers and participants from proceeding with the ceremony as planned.

The incident occurred as Nigerians gathered to remember the victims of the protests and renew calls for accountability and reforms in law enforcement.

Further details surrounding the police action were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
