The Kano State Government has approved the conversion of five Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) into General Hospitals as part of efforts to expand access to quality healthcare services across the state.
The affected facilities are located in Garun Malam, Kumbotso, Ghari, Garko and Kachako.
The state government said the decision is aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery, expanding access to secondary medical services and bringing more comprehensive healthcare closer to residents, particularly those in underserved communities.
Following the approval by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, has constituted a team to begin preparations for the takeover and upgrading of the five facilities.
The team will visit each of the affected centres to assess their existing infrastructure, staffing levels, medical equipment and other requirements needed for their transition into fully operational General Hospitals.
It will also determine the additional resources required to commence services effectively and submit its findings and recommendations to the state government for further action.
According to the state government, the upgrade is expected to improve access to secondary healthcare across the benefiting local government areas, ease pressure on existing general and specialist hospitals, strengthen referral systems and improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, and Nagoda commended Governor Yusuf for approving the upgrade, describing it as a significant step towards improving the state’s healthcare system.
They pledged the commitment of the Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board to ensuring that the transition is carried out efficiently and that the upgraded facilities become operational as quickly as possible.
The government said the initiative is expected to improve access to timely, affordable and quality healthcare for residents of the affected communities.
