Kano Holds Mass Wedding for 1,500 Couples, Offers Financial Support

About 1,500 couples have taken part in a two-day mass wedding organised by the Kano State Government as part of efforts to support low-income families and promote social stability.

The ceremony was organised under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, marking the second time his government has introduced the mass wedding initiative.

The programme was introduced to ease the financial burden of marriage for residents who may struggle to meet the associated costs, particularly amid rising wedding expenses, traditional expectations and family responsibilities in the state.

Under the initiative, each bride received a ₦200,000 dowry, while participating couples were also provided with household items, including beds, mattresses and blankets.

The beneficiaries were further offered support to establish small businesses as part of efforts to help them achieve greater financial independence after marriage.

Speaking about the initiative, one of the beneficiaries, Abubakar Aliyu Musa, said the government’s intervention had helped people who otherwise would have struggled to afford marriage.

The couples underwent health and security screening as well as counselling before the ceremonies, according to the state government.

Governor Yusuf said the initiative was designed to support residents facing financial difficulties while promoting stable and dignified family life in Kano State.

He said the initiative was intended not only to support women who might find it difficult to afford marriage but also to strengthen families and contribute to social stability across Kano State.

For the newly married couples, the financial support and household items are expected to help reduce the initial expenses of setting up their homes and starting married life.
