Life Sentences for Three Convicted in Oyo School Kidnapping Case

A Federal High Court has sentenced three men to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offences connected to the abduction of pupils and teachers during coordinated attacks on schools in Oyo State.

Justice Salim Ibrahim delivered the judgment after the defendants admitted guilt to two of the 10 terrorism charges brought against them by the Federal Government.

The convicts, Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa and Shamsu Adamu Sani, pleaded guilty to charges of concealing information about those responsible for the attacks and belonging to a Boko Haram-affiliated terrorist group.

However, the three denied participating in a conspiracy to carry out the school abductions.

The prosecution told the court that the offences were linked to coordinated attacks on educational institutions in Oyo State in May, during which dozens of pupils and teachers were abducted.

The convictions come weeks after security forces rescued 44 abducted pupils and teachers during a series of counter-terrorism operations. Authorities have described the rescue as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal and terrorist networks responsible for attacks on schools and rural communities.

The Federal Government has repeatedly maintained that it will continue to prosecute individuals involved in terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes while strengthening security operations across the country.

School abductions have remained one of Nigeria’s major security challenges in recent years, with armed groups frequently targeting schools, religious centres and remote communities to demand ransom. The attacks have disrupted education in several states, forcing temporary school closures and raising concerns over the safety of students and teachers.

The latest convictions are expected to reinforce ongoing efforts by security agencies and the judiciary to hold those responsible for terrorism-related offences accountable and deter future attacks on educational institutions.
