NOUN Bursar Nasiru Marafa Shot Dead While Returning From Gusau

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has announced the death of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.

The institution disclosed the incident in an official statement signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi, on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

According to the university, Marafa died on Sunday following what it described as a sudden and untimely incident. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, while the identity and whereabouts of those responsible have not been disclosed.

“According to information available to the University, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau,” the statement said.

Authorities have not disclosed the exact location of the incident, whether Marafa was alone at the time, or whether security operatives have made any arrests in connection with the shooting.

Marafa’s death has sent shockwaves through the university community, where he was regarded as a dedicated administrator who contributed significantly to the institution during his career.

NOUN said the late official occupied several positions of responsibility and served the institution meritoriously before rising to the position of Bursar.

The university stated that Marafa was appointed to the senior financial position in September 2026, shortly before his death.

Describing his passing as a profound loss, the institution mourned him as a “distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family.”

“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement added.

The institution extended its condolences to his immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and other associates affected by the tragedy.

NOUN also offered prayers for those mourning the loss, asking Allah to grant the bereaved family and members of the university community the strength to cope with the development.

The reported killing comes amid persistent security concerns in Zamfara, a state that has experienced attacks, kidnappings and other violent incidents in recent years.

However, the university did not link the incident to any particular group or provide information indicating a possible motive for the attack.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine those responsible.

NOUN said details concerning the burial arrangements would be communicated after the family releases the necessary information.

The institution called on members of its community to remember the deceased for his service, dedication and contributions during his time at the university.
