Nigerian Soldiers Now Earn ₦100,000 Minimum Monthly Salary, Defence Minister Announces

The Federal Government has increased the minimum monthly salary of Nigerian soldiers to ₦100,000, according to the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, in what authorities describe as part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of military personnel.

The announcement comes amid renewed commitments by the government to strengthen the Armed Forces through enhanced welfare packages, improved operational capacity, and better support for troops engaged in counter-insurgency, anti-banditry, and other security operations across the country.

Government Increases Soldiers’ Pay

Speaking during an official engagement, Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru said the salary adjustment reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to boosting the morale and welfare of members of the Armed Forces.

According to the minister, the minimum monthly pay for soldiers has now risen to ₦100,000, alongside other welfare initiatives aimed at improving the living and working conditions of military personnel.

He noted that the government recognizes the sacrifices made by soldiers in defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and combating insecurity across several regions.

Welfare Reforms Extend Beyond Salaries

Badaru explained that the salary increase is only one aspect of broader reforms within the military.

He said the Federal Government has also invested in:

Improved accommodation and barracks rehabilitation.
Better healthcare services for serving personnel and their families.
Procurement of modern military equipment.
Enhanced logistics and operational support.
Expanded insurance and welfare packages for troops.

The minister added that improving troop welfare remains critical to sustaining morale and operational effectiveness.

Security Challenges Continue

The announcement comes as Nigerian security forces continue operations against insurgents, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal groups across the North-East, North-West, North-Central, and other parts of the country.

Military authorities have repeatedly stressed that improved welfare, adequate equipment, and timely remuneration are essential for maintaining the effectiveness and motivation of troops on the frontlines.

Security analysts have also long advocated better welfare packages for personnel, arguing that improved conditions of service contribute to professionalism, discipline, and stronger operational performance.

Calls for Sustained Investment

While welcoming the salary increase, observers say sustained investment in personnel welfare, housing, healthcare, training, and modern equipment will be necessary to address the evolving security challenges facing the country.

Many stakeholders have also urged the government to ensure that the new salary structure is implemented promptly and that broader welfare reforms reach personnel across all ranks.

The latest announcement underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities while recognizing the contributions of the men and women serving in the Armed Forces.
