Obi Says Tinubu Is ‘Leading Nigeria Nowhere,’ Demands Resignation

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, arguing that the president no longer has the capacity to address Nigeria’s growing economic and security challenges effectively.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, the former Anambra State governor said Nigeria needs energetic and committed leadership capable of tackling issues such as poverty, insecurity, hunger and unemployment.

Obi claimed President Tinubu has changed significantly from his days as governor of Lagos State, saying he believes the president should retire and allow others to lead the country.

“The Bola Tinubu that was governor is not the one that is president today. He’s tired. He should be allowed to retire in peace and then go home,” Obi said.

He added:

“As it is right now, Bola Tinubu is leading us nowhere. That’s why maybe I’m calling for his retirement. The man should step aside. He doesn’t have the capacity to do the job.”

Obi also criticized the nation’s political class for focusing on politics rather than addressing the country’s pressing socio-economic challenges.

Citing recent international reports, he expressed concern over worsening poverty and food insecurity.

According to Obi, the World Bank projects that about 79 per cent of Nigerians could be living in poverty, while the World Food Programme has warned that approximately 35 million Nigerians may face hunger.

He argued that national discussions should focus on improving healthcare, reducing the number of out-of-school children, tackling insecurity, and ensuring accountability in the management of public funds.

“The election in 2027 should be about issues that affect ordinary Nigerians,” Obi said. “Nigerians are being kidnapped. Let’s talk about Nigeria.”

The remarks come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum, with opposition figures intensifying criticism of the Tinubu administration over the country’s economic conditions and security situation.
