Oyo Receives Two Surveillance Aircraft to Boost Fight Against Insecurity

The Oyo State Government has received two surveillance aircraft to boost intelligence gathering and strengthen security operations aimed at tackling kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes across the state.

The aircraft arrived at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan on Tuesday, where Governor Seyi Makinde received them.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, said the newly acquired aircraft would strengthen the state’s aerial surveillance capabilities and enhance security operations across Oyo State.

Amotekun Corps and other security agencies will enhance intelligence gathering, monitor criminal movements, and enable faster responses to security threats across Oyo State.

Governor Makinde said the acquisition was a strategic investment designed to complement security personnel already operating on the ground.

Makinde said the aircraft were acquired because of Oyo State’s vast landmass, adding that enhanced aerial surveillance would help security agencies monitor remote areas and improve responses to criminal activities.

The purchase of the aircraft was first announced in July 2025, but delivery was delayed due to manufacturing and assembly processes handled by Chinese technicians.

The arrival of the aircraft comes amid renewed concerns over insecurity following the May 15, 2026, abduction of more than 40 pupils, teachers, and school staff during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area. The victims were later rescued after spending more than 50 days in captivity, but the incident intensified calls for stronger security measures and improved surveillance capabilities.

State officials believe the new aircraft will enhance intelligence-led operations by providing real-time aerial monitoring, supporting coordinated responses by security agencies, and helping to deter criminal activities in vulnerable communities.

The Oyo State Government said the deployment forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen the state’s security architecture and improve the protection of lives and property.
