Police Arrest Nine After Deadly Violence Erupts at Jigawa Market

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested nine suspects in connection with separate incidents of culpable homicide, an attack on a police facility, and violent unrest at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area of the state.

According to the command, the violence erupted following a misunderstanding between a soldier and a 25-year-old man identified as Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim from Miga Local Government Area during market activities.

Police said the confrontation escalated when the soldier allegedly stabbed Ibrahim with a knife. He sustained severe injuries and was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The incident reportedly triggered widespread unrest, during which hoodlums attacked the Gujungu Police Division, fired bows and arrows at security personnel, and set two thatched shops within the market on fire.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Adam, said intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of two suspects believed to have participated in the attack on the police facility. The suspects were identified as Muhammed Muhammed, 22, from Gagarawa Local Government Area, and Faridu Mohammed. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects.

The command also disclosed that six additional suspects were arrested in connection with the killing of a vigilante member during the disturbance. According to police, the suspects allegedly attacked two vigilantes with sticks and cutlasses. One of the victims died from injuries sustained in the assault, while the second is receiving treatment at a medical facility.

Security operatives also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the violence.

The police said investigations are continuing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify all those involved. The command assured residents that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Jigawa State Police Command urged members of the public to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and avoid taking the law into their own hands, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining law and order across the state.
