South Korea is planning to invest approximately $9.8 billion in a large-scale Artificial Intelligence data centre project in South Africa, a move expected to significantly strengthen digital infrastructure across the African continent.

The proposed project is designed to accelerate South Africa’s ambition to emerge as a leading technology and data processing hub in Africa, potentially attracting additional global investment into the country’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

Officials say the investment will support the development of advanced computing facilities, cloud storage systems, and AI-driven technological services that could serve businesses, governments, and research institutions across the region.

Analysts believe the project reflects the growing global competition in artificial intelligence innovation and the increasing importance of Africa in the future digital technology ecosystem.

If successfully implemented, the data centre initiative could create high-skilled technology jobs, improve internet and data services, and help strengthen South Africa’s position as a major player in global digital transformation.

The investment also aligns with broader efforts to support Africa’s emerging AI industry, which is expected to play a key role in economic growth, financial technology expansion, and scientific development in the coming decades.
