Tinubu Congratulates UK’s New PM, Seeks Stronger Nigeria-Britain Partnership

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Right Honourable Andy Burnham on becoming the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic and security cooperation with Britain.

In a congratulatory message delivered by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Federal Government described Burnham’s emergence as an opportunity to deepen one of Nigeria’s most important international partnerships.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria commended the United Kingdom for its peaceful democratic transition and express confidence that the new administration would usher in a new phase of cooperation between Abuja and London.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu noted that Nigeria and the UK share longstanding historical ties and continue to work closely across trade, investment, security, education and cultural exchange.

She also expressed optimism that Burnham’s plans for economic renewal, decentralization and tackling the cost-of-living crisis would strengthen the British economy while improving the lives of its citizens.

The minister added that both countries, as members of the Commonwealth, remain committed to collaborating on climate action, sustainable development, peace and security in Africa, and reforms of multilateral institutions.

Nigeria said it looks forward to expanding cooperation with the new British government in areas including foreign investment, trade, security and economic development.

Britain remains one of Nigeria’s largest trading partners and hosts one of the world’s biggest Nigerian diaspora communities, with both countries maintaining close collaboration on defence, intelligence, education, healthcare and investment.
