Trump Commends Tinubu, Vows Continued US Support in Fight Against Terrorism

The Presidency says a letter from United States President Donald Trump to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu demonstrates that the growing partnership between Nigeria and the United States is delivering tangible results, particularly in the fight against terrorism.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that Trump commended Tinubu’s leadership and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s security efforts.

According to the statement, Trump praised Tinubu for his determination to address Nigeria’s security challenges, especially violence affecting Christian communities.

“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote.

He added: “I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities. It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.”

The letter comes amid increased security cooperation between both countries.

According to the Presidency, Trump and Tinubu agreed in November last year to establish a Joint Working Group, co-chaired by the National Security Advisers of both countries, to deepen collaboration on counter-terrorism.

The partnership includes intelligence sharing, military training, and coordinated security operations.

The Presidency said one of the outcomes of the collaboration was the May 16 operation against ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad region, during which security forces reportedly killed senior ISIS commander Abubakar Al-Minoki along with several of his associates.

Trump also described the US-Nigeria relationship as increasingly important amid rising insecurity across West Africa.

“The United States-Nigeria relationship is crucial at a time where conflict has spread across West Africa and around the world. We both share a mutual goal of confronting terrorism in all its forms, and our historic US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap has established a robust framework to accomplish this feat,” he said.

He further highlighted the deployment of United States Special Operations Forces to support the Armed Forces of Nigeria through training, intelligence, and operational assistance.

“I am proud to have deployed the United States Special Operations Forces… to equip the brave men and women in the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the skills, tools and intelligence they need to protect your homeland and ensure the safety and security of citizens,” Trump stated.

The development follows a recent visit to Abuja by US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, who met with senior Nigerian officials and pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation in security and other strategic sectors.
