Tyla Drops Nigeria From World Tour Amid Boycott Campaign

South African singer and Grammy Award winner Tyla has removed Nigeria from the list of destinations for her upcoming world tour, days after announcing the schedule for her APOP* tour.

When the tour dates were first released, Lagos was listed alongside Johannesburg, Cape Town and several international cities. However, an updated itinerary published on the singer’s official website no longer includes the Nigerian stop.

No official explanation has been given for the change.

The development follows growing calls from Nigerians urging the singer to cancel her planned performance in the country over recent anti-migrant protests and xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

An online petition calling for Tyla to be barred from performing in Nigeria until the attacks against foreign nationals cease has attracted thousands of signatures. Many Nigerians also criticised the singer on social media for not publicly addressing the situation.

The controversy comes amid strained diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa over reports of attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians. Thousands of migrants have left South Africa in recent weeks, with many Nigerians returning home on government-assisted evacuation flights.

The backlash has also extended to other South African entertainers. Comedian Trevor Noah faced criticism after appearing in a tourism campaign promoting South Africa, with critics accusing him of remaining silent on the xenophobic tensions.

South African authorities have maintained that they are taking action against individuals involved in violence and have defended the country’s right to enforce its immigration laws. The government has also warned that the controversy is beginning to affect the country’s image and creative industry.

Tyla has not publicly commented on the removal of Nigeria from her tour schedule or the boycott campaign.
