Deadly Thunderstorm Claims Six Lives in Adamawa Farming Community

Six people have lost their lives after a powerful thunderstorm triggered a fatal lightning strike in Ganye Local Government Area of Adamawa State, leaving a rural community in mourning and three others receiving medical attention.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon in Dadiri-Tirigali village, where a group of residents had been tending to farmland before severe weather swept across the area.

According to the Adamawa State Police Command, nine individuals were caught in the storm when lightning struck at about 4:00 p.m.

Police spokesperson, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, said the command received an emergency alert from the Ganye Divisional Headquarters and immediately dispatched officers to the location.

On arrival, the victims were found unconscious and were taken for urgent medical treatment. Health officials later confirmed that six of them had died, while three regained consciousness after receiving care.

The identities of those affected have not yet been made public.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Dadiri-Tirigali, with grieving families and residents struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss. Community members described the victims as individuals who had simply gone about their daily farming activities before the weather changed unexpectedly.

As the rainy season intensifies across Nigeria, meteorologists continue to warn of increased risks associated with thunderstorms, strong winds and lightning. Agricultural communities are particularly exposed because farming often takes place in open areas with limited access to safe shelter.

Safety experts advise people to leave the field immediately once they hear thunder or see dark storm clouds gathering. Remaining outdoors, sheltering beneath isolated trees or staying close to metal equipment during electrical storms significantly increases the risk of injury or death.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has repeatedly encouraged Nigerians to monitor weather forecasts and heed early warnings as periods of intense rainfall continue across several parts of the country.

The Adamawa State Police Command expressed condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as a tragic natural disaster while urging residents to remain vigilant during periods of severe weather.
