Two people have died following a fatal road accident at Leme along the Abeokuta–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, prompting fresh calls for motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and avoid dangerous driving.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said preliminary findings indicate that excessive speed led to the incident, reinforcing concerns over one of the leading causes of road fatalities across Nigeria.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Command of the FRSC said emergency responders were deployed immediately after receiving a distress call. Rescue personnel attended to the victims, secured the scene, and worked to minimise disruption to traffic.
The corps confirmed that two occupants lost their lives in the incident. Officials also recovered personal belongings of the victims, including a mobile phone and an identity card, while clearing the affected section of the highway to restore the free flow of vehicles.
Reacting to the development, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and urged all road users to place safety above haste.
He advised motorists and motorcyclists to observe prescribed speed limits, remain alert behind the wheel, and avoid risky actions that endanger lives.
According to the FRSC, travelling above the recommended speed limit reduces a driver’s ability to respond to unexpected situations and significantly increases the severity of collisions when they occur.
The agency stressed that many fatal road incidents can be prevented through responsible driving, strict compliance with traffic regulations, and routine vehicle maintenance.
Reaffirming its commitment to reducing road accidents, the Ogun State Command said it will continue to strengthen traffic law enforcement, expand public awareness campaigns, and provide rapid emergency response services to improve safety on the state’s highways.
Road safety advocates have also encouraged motorists to plan their journeys properly, avoid fatigue, maintain safe following distances, and drive with extra caution, particularly on busy inter-state routes where high traffic volumes increase the risk of serious accidents.
