Governor Abba Yusuf has stated that the nomination and confirmation of Murtala Sule Garo as deputy governor of Kano State was strictly based on merit, competence, and his track record of service to the state.

The governor made the remarks during the 39th Executive Council Meeting held at the Government House in Kano, according to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary on Tuesday.

Yusuf explained that several names were considered for the position following the resignation of former deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo, but the administration carefully assessed each individual based on experience, past performance, and contributions to the development of Kano State.

“We tried as much as possible to select someone who can provide meaningful contributions toward the development of the state,” the governor said.

“So many names were presented, but we had to look into their competency, performances, and what they had contributed to the state. Murtala Sule Garo is a seasoned politician who can make his own contribution.”

Last week, Governor Yusuf officially transmitted Garo’s name to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, a process that was completed swiftly by lawmakers.

The governor commended the Assembly, led by Speaker Jibril Falgore, for what he described as a prompt and smooth confirmation process.

He also revealed that the deputy governor-designate would soon be sworn into office and urged political stakeholders, civil servants, and residents of the state to support him in carrying out his responsibilities effectively.

Governor Yusuf further congratulated the newly appointed Head of Service, Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, praising her previous contributions to the state during her tenure as director and permanent secretary.

He expressed confidence in her ability to deliver in her new position and called on workers within the civil service to cooperate with her administration.

During the Executive Council meeting, the governor was also presented with 39 awards of excellence from various organisations within and outside Kano State in recognition of his administration’s achievements across different sectors.

One of the recognitions reportedly came with a cash gift of N30,000 from a primary school teacher who commended the governor’s efforts in improving the education sector in the state.

The development comes amid ongoing political realignments in Kano State, as the administration continues efforts to strengthen governance and public service delivery.
